The launch of smart cities mission is not only expected to change the urban landscape of the entire country but would also give a fillip to the economy, believe experts.

"Besides improving the economic climate and the GDP, it would attract the investment from overseas. It would also create job opportunities and would also mobilize big corporate and industrialist," says D K Aggarwal, CMD, SMC Investments and Advisors Ltd.

"This initiative by the government is likely to help the construction sector, the real estate industry, infrastructure, steel and cement sectors," he adds.

Aggarwal is of the view that even the consumer durable sector, which generally benefits from construction activities, is also going to get a much-needed boost.

Experts also speculate on the fact that the mission of 100 cities in next five years would not be the easy task and it also not looks very feasible, as it could increase costing pressure on economy.

"Despite concerns, even if the government ends up with the development of 40-60 cities in next 5 years, that would be enough to generate huge order book for certain specific sectors such as cement & cement products, engineering & capital goods, metals, infrastructure, power, etc..," says Tushar Pendharkar, Head of Research, Right Investment Advisory Services.

"In addition, it could also deliver indirect benefit to other sectors such as Auto & Auto Ancillary, Real Estate & Housing, Consumer & FMCG, etc." he adds.
