MUMBAI: The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) is going digital, as it aims to speed up the work on rehabilitation projects by developers as well as address the lack of transparency in the entire process. The authority, established two decades ago with a mandate to protect slum dwellers' rights and promote redevelopment of slum areas in the city, will bring its entire record room online. It has already archived 1.17 crore documents related slum dwellers in Mumbai.

....

The authority is working on a survey of the boundaries of slums spread over 54 sq km in Mumbai and Thane, and the details will be put online. It has already finished this work on 13 sq km and will complete the balance in the next six months. The Electronic Table Survey will help the SRA in maintaining data such as the number of slum dwellers eligible for rehabilitation and the area occupied by them.

Non-availability or restricted access to these records usually leads to manipulation of SRA schemes, with noneligible people taking benefits. Apart from digitising records on slums, all details and necessary approvals - from the eligibility list to giving possession of redeveloped units to slum dwellers - will also be made available online.
