ACAHUCH is a research hub established in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning to provide an international perspective on research and teaching in architectural history and heritage across the world, with a particular emphasis on Australia and the Asia-Pacific. Working alongside industry, academic and government partners, it fosters a collaborative approach to the critical study of architectural history, heritage conservation and digital, cultural, landscape and urban heritage, history and design.

PhD Scholarship: Architectural History and Cultural Heritage in Asia

The PhD project will focus on an aspect of the architectural history and/or cultural heritage in the Asia-Pacific region on a nominated country/countries, region or time period.

The successful candidate will be located in ACAHUCH and work within a dynamic, supportive and robust academic environment. Candidates require an Honours degree (or equivalent) in architecture, architectural history, history, art history, Asian studies or other cognate area. Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Heritage of the Built Environment (3 years)

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will have primary responsibility for research, publication and engagement on a research project focused on heritage of the build environment. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will also contribute to developing ACAHUCH’s cross-sector collaboration through workshops and other public events, faculty and university development of research capacity, and will work to progress a policy agenda with relevant stakeholders, including local, state and Commonwealth government and the heritage and cultural sectors. The Fellow may also be required to contribute on topics related to their research to teaching units in the Master of Urban and Cultural Heritage and other appropriate subjects.

In particular, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow is required to develop, undertake and complete a three-year research program in a topic aligned to ACAHUCH’s key priorities and interests. Preference may be given to the following areas, although other topics may also be considered:

  •  the economics of heritage (including such issues as urban development, tourism)
  •  the adaptive reuse of built heritage in a contemporary context
  •  the management of twentieth century heritage
