Sangath departs from the usual architectual office insofar as it includes a resarch centre and community related facilities. Architecturally, it is an attempt to evolve structures an forms which are suited to the local climate and which evoke a local ethos.
The principle design element is the vaulted roofing and the building is sunk into the ground to make the vaults more prominent and to create a stepped outdoor space for lectures and slide shows. These steps lead to the terrace and the main studios.
The architect, acting as his own client, was able to express his attitudes concerning community co-operation and individualistic expression, which accounts for the unusual incorporation of multiple activities "under one roof".

Low-technology construction methods and energy-related elements are incorporated in the design and decoration of the building, and recycled materials are used in both an energy-related and decorative way.
