With MF Husain, everything is accidental, even though by long-standing design. Just a fortnight before the opening, he suddenly decided to have a gallery alongside the gufa. And sure enough, there it is, whipped up by some Aladdin's lamp and Doshi – an elegant 100-metre gallery. Husain has christened it the Chester Herwitz Gallery, after the American collector who has over 200 works of his.
And in it, he will display his new Theorama series. Husain painted his nine-foot-long versions of each of the nine religions in the St James' Hotel in London last year. This will finally be the home for Theorama: "They can travel outside but will always return here".
The gufa became such an obsession for both men that Husain has put in Rs 38 lakh and Doshi around Rs 10 lakh. Initially Husain had planned to paint the gufa's interior walls, finally, he decided to leave it to the tribals. He wants the gufa to be used for literary discussions or music concerts. Easel and paint are strictly forbidden.
