Bachelor of Architecture

Five Year Programme (68 Seats)

Architecture is concerned with the design and construction of buildings in their sociological, technical and environmental context. There is increasing recognition of architecture today as an intellec- tual discipline, as an artform, and as a profession intimately linked with the single largest sector of investment in the economy.

Architects are called upon to design and execute building projects and resolve other issues related to the man-made environment in a variety of settings. The B.Arch Programme aims at attaining a high level of contextual excellence in Architectural Design. The Design Stream of courses and studio exercises is seen as the core of the programme with crucial supportive inputs from courses in the three other streams Arts and Humanities, Technological, and the Pro- fessional. A strong foundation of multidisciplinary enabling skills related to space, construction environment and aesthetics is provided for. These skills include drawing, architectural presentation, research and writing, and technical and managerial aptitudes in problem definition and solution seeking.

The curriculum is structured as a Five-Year, Two-Stage programme, the first stage consisting of three years of' full-time study followed by practical training in professional offices or construction sites for 20 weeks. The second stage consists of full-time study for one and a half years and includes writing of' a Research Dissertation, preparation of a Seminar and presentation of a Design Thesis along with advanced level courses and electives in all the four streams mentioned earlier. The student gradually learns that architecture has always evolved under the influence of at least four, occasionally conflicting, forces - history and culture, social aspirations. climate and evolving technology.

Students of the B.Arch programme are exposed to a rich diversity of design and planning expertise through both full-time faculty of several Departments of Study in SPA and distinguished visiting faculty. Outstanding professionals serve on Design Juries. National and International level workshops, exhibitions and seminars are held frequently; several of these are organized in partnership with uni- versities and research organizations abroad. Participating students are exposed to new ways of thinking and seeing. The Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture has been active in energy studies, climate-responsive approaches to design and solar architecture. Thus a whole new approach to ecologically sound design is emerging. Students directly benefit from these initiatives.

A vigorous broad-based architectural education serves as a window to multiple career choices/job opportunities depending on personal interests, in the public, private, NGO and multinational corporate sectors. Students wishing to pursue further studies would he eligible to apply to any of the Masters and Doctoral Programmes run at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi As the B.Arch degree of SPA is recognised internationally, a number of our students are accepted for advanced courses of study in the finest universities abroad each year The B.Arch course has been approved by the Indian Institute of Architects, the Council of' Architecture and the Commonwealth Association of Architects.
