Bachelor's Programmes

Eligibility

The minimum educational qualifications for admission to the First Year of the Bachelor's Degree Courses in Architecture/Planning are :

Pass in the senior School Certificate Examination (on completion of the 10+2 pattern, 12 year-course) of the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, or any other examination recognized as equivalent with-

  1. General Science including Chemistry at the 10th Stage, as a passed subject;
  2. At least 60 percent marks in the aggregate in English (core or optional), Physics, Mathematics, and one more optional subject in which the candidate has secured maximum marks at the 10+2 stage, provided all the subjects have been passed separately. The expression "at least 60 percent of marks in the aggregate" shall not mean inclusion of figures like 59.99%;
  3. For SC/ST candidates a pass with minimum aggregate of marks obtained in (b) above;
  4. At least 55 percent marks in the aggregate in (b) above for candidates qualifying as (i) Children/ Widows of personnel of Armed/Para-military forces killed/disabled in action during hostilities, and (ii) Physically Handicapped.

The above limit of percentage of marks described in (b) are also applicable to foreign nationals.

Admission Procedure

Selection for admission to the Bachelor's Degree Programmes in Architecture/Planning will be made through an Entrance Examination comprising of two tests: Test-I and Test-II.

Test-I: General knowledge, Scholastic Performance and I. Q. Test (Common to both Architecture and Planning admissions).

This test aims (a) to judge a candidate's awareness of the life around him/her; this may include topics and subjects which a person of the candidate's age is normally expected to know; (b) to measure the level of scholastic achievement - this is designed to measure the candidate's understanding of the subjects of study at the Secondary School level and ability to apply concepts and principles for problem solving; and (c) to assess the general level of intelligence of the candidates. Test-I consists of objective type questions having multiple choice answers.

Test-I is normally held in the first week of July at selected centres in Delhi. The total number of candidates included in the Merit List (in order of merit) is restricted to five times (for B.Arch.) and seven times (for B. Planning) the sanctioned intake in respect of each category of candidates. Those whose names appear in the Merit List drawn up after Test-I will be eligible to appear in Test-II.

Test-II: Aptitude Test (Separate aptitude tests will be held for admission to the Bachelor's Programmes in Architecture and Planning. Candidates will have to take the relevant test).

Aptitude Test for Architecture: The candidates for Architecture will take a series of tests for assessment of their aptitude in (a) Visual and Spatial Perception; (b) Creative Writing Ability; and (c) Aesthetic Sensitivity. These tests will comprise writing, free hand drawing, object composition, etc.

Aptitude Test for Planning: The candidates for Planning will take tests for assessment of their ability to comprehend, ability to write on, and general awareness about environment, society and human habitation.

Test-II is held two days after Test-I at the premises of the School of Planning and Architecture.

The Final Merit List for admission of candidates is drawn by combining the percentage of marks obtained by candidates in Test-I and Test-II.

Only those candidates who obtain at least 50% of the aggregate marks in the First and Second Test (45% in the case of other special categories in respect of whom relaxation of marks is allowed) will be considered while drawing up the Final Merit List for admission. For SC/ST candidates the cut off point will not be less than two-thirds of the cut off point adjudged for the Open General Category.

Candidates applying for any reserved seat mentioned above must submit the following certificates, otherwise the candidates can be considered only for the Open General Category seats:

  1. For admission to seats reserved for Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes, a certificate from an approved district authority stating the Scheduled Caste/Tribe to which the candidate belongs.
  2. For admission to seats reserved for Children/ Widows of personnel of Armed/Para-Military Forces who were killed/Disabled in action during hostilities, a certificate to that effect from the concerned authorities of the Forces.
  3. For admission to seats reserved for the Physically Handicapped, the candidates must submit an attested photocopy of their physically handicapped certificate from a Central/State Government Hospital. Such candidates will be required, on selection for admission, to present themselves before the Medical Board constituted by the School to determine their degree of handicap and physical capacity to pursue studies. The degree of physical handicap should be 40% and above.
  4. For admission to seats reserved for Educationally Deficient States Union Territories, the candidates must possess:
    1. The prescribed Domicile Certificate; and
    2. A certificate from the Principal of the Institution to the effect that the candidate has passed the 10th, 11th and 12th Class Examinations (or equivalent thereof) in the State/Union Territory of domicile.

General Information

Admit Cards are sent to the candidates who are eligible to appear at the Test by the last week of June. The candidates who fail to get their Admit Card may be allowed to appear at the Entrance Examination on production of the Acknowledgement

Card issued by the School and on production of their attested photograph for issuing a Duplicate Admit Card, provided they are eligible to appear at the entrance examination in accordance with the eligibility criteria. They shall report at the School building two hours before the commencement of the Examination in order to determine and reach the Examination Centre allotted to them. Due to the large number of candidates involved these Centres are at different locations.

Candidates who are awaiting the results of the qualifying examination must submit in person their Marksheets by the last week of July, clearly indicating their Application Number. Candidates who fail to comply with this may be provisionally admitted, subject to the condition that in the event of their not fulfilling the prescribed admission qualifications their provisional admission shall stand automatically cancelled and no claim for refund of fees, deposits, etc., shall be entertained.

Candidates must have attained the age of 17 years on or before October 1 of the year in which they seek admission. However, relaxation in age upto six months only may be allowed with the approval of the competent authorities of the School.

The medium of Entrance Examination/Aptitude Test is English/Hindi. The medium of Course Instructions/Examinations is English only.

The provisional admission list is normally displayed on the Notice Board of the School in the third week of July. Fees and deposits are to be paid within one week of display of the list, after which the waiting list will become operational and candidates on the waiting list who present themselves for admission will be offered admission on the basis of the notified Merit List, as and when seats become available. The School does not take any responsibility for sending intimation to the candidates who are provisionally selected for admission or are placed on the waiting list for provisional admission. Therefore, they are advised to make their own arrangements in this regard.

Fees other than the School security deposits, are not refundable once a candidate has been admitted to the School. The security deposits are refundable after deduction of dues, if any, within six months from the date of leaving the School.

The Academic Session commences on August 1. The candidates admitted to the Bachelor's Degree Courses are required to report on the opening day without fail, otherwise their admission may be treated as cancelled.

The decisions of the School regarding eligibility of candidates, the conduct of Entrance Examinations, the manner of preparing the Merit List, selection procedures, etc., will be final.

The application form and information bulletin, containing full details, may be obtained from the bankers of the School, i.e., UCO Bank, IIPA Building, Indraprastha Estate, Ring Road, New Delhi and its other notified branches during May.

Requests for Information Bulletins and Application Forms by post must be accompanied by a crossed demand draft on any Nationalised Bank and drawn in favour of SCHOOL OF PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURE, payable at NEW DELHI. Such requests are to be addressed to the Registrar of the School. (Payment in cheques will not be accepted).

The Last date for the submission of completed application forms is during the first week of June. Applications received after this date will not be accepted.

Physical Fitness

Candidates selected for provisional admission are required to produce a Physical Fitness Certificate from an MBBS doctor at the time of their admission to the Course.

Foreign nationals are required to undergo a Government of India mandated AIDS Test at a hospital recommended by the School.

Foreign Nationals

Ten per cent, i.e., six seats in the B.Arch. Course and two seats in the B.Planning Course may be available to foreign nationals in addition to the sanctioned intake. Such candidates are required to apply to the Government of India through their diplomatic channels.

Scholarship

The School offers Merit-cum-Means Scholarships of Rs. 170/- per month (Rs. 185/- for SC/ST) subject to rules.

Discipline

The students and their parents/guardians are required to sign a declaration to the effect that admission is granted on the terms and conditions and rules of the School and that the Director's decision in all matters concerning their admissions, studies, scholarships, examinations, discipline and conduct shall be final and binding on them.

Fees and Deposits

Currently, fees and deposits for undergraduates at the time of admission total upto approximately Rs.8000 for day scholars. The total for hostellers is approximatly Rs. 17000 not including mess charges. Fees are projected to increase by 25 % each year.

Master's Programmes

Eligibility

The educational qualifications for admission to the various post- graduate programmes offered by the School are at least 55% marks in the aggregate at the qualifying examination (50% in respect of SC/ST candidates ) for each discipline as given below.

Urban Planning

Bachlor's degree in Architecture/Planning/Civil Engineering/Architectural Engineering of a recognised University or equivalent.

OR

Master's degree in Geography/Economics/Sociology of a recognised university or Equivalent.

Regional Plannign

Bachlor's degree in Architecture/Planning/Civil Engineering/Architectural Engineering of a recognised University or equivalent.

OR

Master's degree in Geography/Economics/Sociology of a recognised university or Equivalent.

 

Note:

  1. The sanctioned intake for the above five specialisations in Master of Planning is 70
  2. A.I.I.A (By examination) has been treated as equivalent to B.Arch.
  3. An academic Programme will be conducted only when three or more students register for a particular discipine.

Sponsored Candidates

Candidates sponsored by Central/State Governments/ Statutory Organisations as well as Public Institutions for admissions to Master's Programmes must have been in regular service. A candidate is considered as sponsored if the sponsoring organisation undertakes to provide him/her with full salary or adequate financial assistance for the full period of study.

Sponsored candidates fulfilling the admission requirements may be required to appear for interview and test on the dates notified alongwith non-sponsored private candidates.

Qualifications: As prescribed above with atleast 55% of the marks in the aggregate or more at the qualifying examination.

Relaxation of 5% marks in the qualifying examination is given in respect of SC/ST candidates for admissions to Master's Programmes in the School.

Selection Criteria

Only GATE/UGC (NET) examination qualified candidates may be admitted to the seats for non-sponsored category of students (General & SCs/STs). When GATE/UGC(NET) qualified candidates are not available, admission may be given on merit to those who are not qualified in GATE/UGC(NET). Eligible candidates, on the basis of their previous academic background/performance at the GATE/UGC(NET) examination, will be called for interview and tests.

Candidates called for interview and test will be paid one way second class railway fare on submission of a Photostat copy of the rail ticket/supporting documents. A provisional list of candidates in order of merit, selected for admission to the various academic programmes will be displayed on the School Notice Board by the end of the second week of July. The School does not take responsibility for sending any intimation to them regarding their provisional selection for admission. Candidates on the waiting list will be offered admission on the basis of the merit list as and when seats become available. They are advised to present themselves or their guardians without fail. The wait-listed candidates who are offered admission are required to pay the fees and deposits immediately, failing which the selection shall be treated as cancelled without any further intimation to them. Candidates shall make their own arrangements to determine their final status regarding Selection.

The decision of the School regarding the eligibility of the candidates, the conduct of interviews and tests, the manner of preparing the merit list, selection procedures, and the admission of the candidates to various academic programmes will be final.

General Information

The application form and information bulletin containing full details may be obtained from the bankers of the School, i.e. UCO Bank, I.I.P.A. Building, I.P. Estate, Ring Road, New Delhi-2 and its other notified branches during banking hours, in the second week of May.

Requests for information bulletins and application forms by post must be accompanied by a crossed demand draft on any nationalised bank and drawn in favour of SCHOOL OF PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURE payable at NEW DELHI. Such requests are to be addressed to the Registrar of the School (Payment by cheque will not be accepted).

The School will not be responsible for any loss in Postal Transit. The candidates must fill up the Application Form, in duplicate, and return both the forms clearly specifying the course to which admission is sought and indicate their order of preference upto a maximum of two disciplines, if they desire to be considered for admission to more than one course.

The second order of preference may be indicated in the Duplicate Copy of the form.

The last date for receipt of the completed Application Form, in duplicate, is in the second week of June. Candidates who have appeared in the prescribed qualifying examination and whose results have not been declared, may also apply. They may be provisionally admitted, if otherwise selected for admission, subject to the condition that they submit in person, their marks-sheet by a date notified by the School, and are found eligible for admission, failing which their provisional admis- sion shall stand automatically cancelled and no claim for refund of fees, deposits, etc., will be entertained.

The Academic Session commences on August 1. Candidates admitted to the various courses are required to report on August 1, failing which their admission shall be treated as cancelled unless extension of time is requested for and granted.

Fees other than the School Security deposits, are not refundable once a candidate has been admitted to the School. The security deposits are refundable after deduction of dues, if any, within six months from the date of leaving the School.

Reservation of Seats

Twenty Two and a half percent of the sanctioned intake is reserved for SC/ST candidates (15% for SC and 7.5% for ST).

Upto 50% of the sanctioned seats may be made available to candidates sponsored by Central Government, State Governments, Statutory Organisations as well as Public Institutions, except for the Course in Building Engineering and Management where 25% seats may be made available. The reservation is subject to availability of suitable sponsored candidates.

Physical Fitness

Candidates selected for provisional admission are required to produce a Physical Fitness Certificate from an MBBS doctor at the time of their admission to the Course.

Foreign nationals are required to undergo a Government of India mandated AIDS Test at a hospital recommended by the School.

Foreign Nationals

Ten. per cent of the sanctioned intake may be made available to foreign nationals in addition to the sanctioned intake. Such candidates are required to apply to the Government of India through their diplomatic channels.

Scholarship

A limited number of scholarships, each of the value of Rs.2500/- per month, will be awarded on merit and subject to terms and conditions prescribed by the Government of India/AlCTE for the non- sponsored category of students admitted to Master's Programmes with valid GATE Score/qualified in the UGC (NET) examination.

Fees and Deposits

Currently, fees and deposits for post-graduates at the time of admission total upto approximataly Rs. 8500 for day scholars. The total for hostellers is approximately Rs. 18000 not including mess charges. Fees are projected to increase by 25% each year.

Doctoral Programmes

Eligibility

Applicants for admission to the Ph.D programmes shall possess the following qualifications:

Master's Degree in Urban Planning/Regional Planning/Environmental Planning/Housing/ Transport Planning/Landscape Architecture/Urban Design/ Architectural Conservation/Building Engineering and Management/Industrial Design conducted by the School or their equivalent from any other recognised University/Institution with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks;

OR

Bachelor's Degree in Architecture/Planning of the School or its equivalent from 'any other recognised University/Institution with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks and five years experience in teaching/research/professional practice.

Relaxation in the aggregate marks specified above may be made in case of exceptionally qualified applicants.

Reservation of Seats for SC/ST Candidates

Upto 22.5% seats (15% for SC and 7.5% for ST candidates interchangeable, if necessary) admitted in each programme are reserved for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates. All Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates, who have passed the qualifying examination with a minimum 50% of aggregate marks, are eligible to apply for admission. Candidates are required to submit SC/ST certificates issued only by an officer not below the rank of Magistrate/Tehsildar in support of their claim for admission against the reserved quota.

Procedure for Admission

The applicant shall state and submit the following with the application :

  1. Proposed Department of Study;
  2. Broad area of research: nature, objective and scope of the subject, and tentative title;
  3. Other particulars that the applicant may like to furnish regarding the choice of the subject and its importance for research; and
  4. Name of the Adviser of his/her choice, if any.

The Head of the concerned Department of Study shall process the applications of candidates possessing the prescribed qualifications through the DRC.

On the scrutiny of the applications suitable candidates will be called to appear for an interview.

After giving due consideration to the qualifications and on interviewing the candidates, the DRC shall make its recommendations to the Dean of Studies covering the following aspects:

  1. that the research on the proposed subject can be profitably pursued;
  2. that the research work can be appropriately undertaken in the concerned Department of Study;
  3. that the candidate possesses the requisite qualifications and competencies for the proposed research;
  4. the name of the Adviser for the applicant, preferably from the concerned Department of Study, or from another Department of Study, Centre or Unit in the School;
  5. the name of the External Adviser(s), in addition to the Internal Adviser, if deemed necessary; and
  6. specify course(s), other than the essential and optional courses prescribed for the doctoral programme, which the candidate shall pursue and satisfactorily complete within the first three semesters of registration.

The Dean of Studies shall receive the DRC's recommendations and place the applications before the CDP for its final decision on the admission of candidates to the Ph.D. Programmes, the names of the Adviser(s) and the courses to be pursued by the candidates.

The candidates selected by the CDP will be registered for the Ph.D. Programmes on payment of the prescribed fees and deposits and compliance of other required formalities.

Course Work

  1. All the candidates shall successfully complete a research methodology course organised by the School and also optional courses prescribed for the programme. as well as other courses specified and recommended by the respective DRC. A candidate having only a B.Arch./B.Planning or other Bachelor's Degree of the School shall, in addition, be required to pursue course work successfully in six subjects of the Master's Degree Courses of the School; and
  2. Faculty members of the School as well as teachers of other institutions working towards a Ph.D Degree may be exempted from compulsory/ optional courses prescribed for the doctoral programme by the Chairman of the DRC with the concurrence/recommendations of their Advisers.

Candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy are required to show ability to conduct original investigations, to test ideas, whether their own or those of others, and to understand the re- lationship of their themes to wider fields of knowledge. The results of such investigations should include matter worthy of publication.

Candidates registered for Doctoral Programmes will have to refer to the SPA Regulations for the award of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) for further detailed information.

Fellowship/Contigency Grant

Fellowships and Contingent Grants are awarded to eligible candidates in accordance with norms laid down by the University Grants Commission/AICTE and the Academic Council of the School from time to time. In-service candidates are not eligible for fellowship and contingent grant. The awardees are required to devote their entire time to doctoral research and are not permitted to engage themselves in full-time or part-time professional practice or employment with public or private institutions or organisations.

Fellowships would be admissible for a maximum period of five years only.

Scholars with Bachelor's Degree in Architecture/Planning or equivalent without GATE/National Level Test may be considered for award of Fellowships/Contingent Grants after they qualify in the next GATE/National Level Test, i.e., the date of the examination.

General Information

Requests for Application Forms and Information Bulletins, accompanied by Crossed Demand Draft in favour of School of Planning and Archi- tecture payable at New Delhi, are to be addressed to the Registrar of the School.

The application form should be completed in all respects and supported by attested copies of certificates and marksheets of all the examinations passed, testimonials of experience, research, etc.

In-service applicants must apply through their Department/Office.

The School reserves the right to call for interview a limited number of candidates, based on merit. The interview is normally scheduled to be held during the last week of July. An interview letter will be sent to the candidates.

Candidates (other than in-service candidates) called for interview, will be paid a travelling allowance for the journey by the shortest route from the Railway Station nearest to the residence/place of work and back (within India) by Second Class railway on submission of a photocopy of the rail ticket/supporting documents.

The medium of the Admission Test/Interview/ Instructions/Examinations is English.

Fees other than the School Security Deposits are not refundable, once a candidate has been admitted to the School. The security deposits are refundable after deducting dues, if any, within one year from the date of leaving the School.

The doctoral programme will commence in the first week of September.

Physical Fitness

Foreign Nationals

Eligibility qualifications for foreign nationals are the same as stated above. They are required to submit their applications to the Government of India in the Ministry of Human Resource Development or the Ministry of External Affairs through their diplomatic channels. They need not fill the School Application Form prescribed for Indian Nationals.

Currently, fees and deposits for doctoral candidates at the time of admission total upto approximately Rs. 11000 for day scholars. The total for hostellers is approximately Rs. 21000 not including mess charges. Fees are projected to increase by 25 % each year.
