Patna's Golghar, a large, egg-shaped granary built in 1786 by John Garstin (1756-1820), stands on the western end of historical Patna,6 next to what later became the Race Course, and is now called Gandhi Maidan.1 His early effort in Patna was ordered by Warren Hastings, then governor-general of India.

  • 1. Garstin was an architect and engineer for the East India Company; he built the Town Hall in Calcutta (1813), and rose to the position of Surveyor General and Chief Engineer of Bengal.
