Architect Anant Raje was presented in January this year, the highest honour of the Indian Institute of Architects - the IIA - Baburao Mhatre Gold Medal 1993. To mark this occasion, we are featuring some of his important works of the last decade. In recent months, he has enthralled audiences in a number of cities, all over the country with presentations of his Architecture of the Sun and the Sky, Light and Shade, Order and Structure, Tradition and Majesty.

One of the later works of his mentor, the late Prof. Louis Kahn is discussed by Prof. Anu Banerjee, who traces the Indian influences on Kahn’s work in a preceptive and analytical piece.

The relationship between Art and Architecture was the subject of the L.M. Chitale Memorial Lecture on the eve of the National Convention in Madras in January. We are presenting the text of this lecture by Ar. Sumit Ghosh.

Periodic review of one’s past performance and charting out courses for future action, assessing one’s strength and weaknesses and preparing to meet the challenges of the present and future should be the concern of members. Prof. Madhav Deobhakta discusses Continuing Professional Development and suggests ways of defining goals by professionals and setting up programmes in those directions by the professional body.

The Institute’s new building in New Bombay is going to be one of the important items on the Agenda of the New IIA Council. The objective and the process itself of this development should enhance the role and functioning of the Indian Institute of Architects, and all members should participate in this endeavour.
