St. Mary&#039;s Orthodox Church at Karattukunnel, Amayanoor, Kottayam

The St. Mary's church sits on top of a hill in Amayanoor, Kottayam district, overlooking rubber plantations. The design of the church appears to make use of the approach from the foot of the hill, which makes the building profile and skyline especially important.

As the initial drawings suggest ( the final drawings are missing), the initial proposal was a departure from the typical typology ( as seen in St. Thomas orthodox church at Vadakkanmannoor) in that it proposed a roof with a single slope from west to east with a huge concrete gutter that would collect rain water. The concrete gutter would also act as an entry porch underneath. This design was modified later, by the demands of the client, reverting back to the conventional typology. The east elevation which was key to the design, was however maintained, with the porch taking the form of a 45 degree sloped overhang.
