Ajmer, from above the ''Daulat Bagh''.
Photograph of Ajmer from James Burgess' 'Photographs of Architecture and Scenery in Gujarat and Rajputana' taken by Colin Murray in c.1872. Ajmer was established by Raja Ajya-Raja as the capital of the Rajput Chauhans in the12th century. Due to its strategic location the city went through many dynastic changes from Mewar to Malwa to the Mughals. This is a view looking towards the town, with a ridge of hills beyond, and the Ana Sagar lake and bund in the right foreground. Around the Lake are marble pavilions, built by Shah Jahan (r.1628-58) in the 17th century, set in the Daulat Bagh gardens.
