Amber - the Kanch Mehal [Ganesh Pol]

Photograph of the Ganesh Pol in Amber from James Burgess' 'Photographs of Architecture and Scenery in Gujarat and Rajputana' taken by Colin Murray in c.1872. Amber was the capital of the Rajput Kucchwaha dynasty until 1728 when it was moved to Jaipur. The Amber palace on a rocky hill was built from 1600 by Man Singh I to rival Mughal opulence. Ganesh Pol or Elephant Gate is the gateway to the royal apartments, which are built around a garden. This is a view looking towards the Ganesh Pol from the courtyard, with a corner of the Diwan-i-Am visible in the left foreground. The Ganesh Pol considered to be one of the finest gateways is covered in mosaic, with projecting oriels filled with carved lattice screens.
