Through a "Passage to India", this paper proposes an approach to a cultural geography of the City. It aims to avoid both cultural essentialism and European ethnocentrism. To understand the signification of City in India, we have to understand Indian spatiality as a construct and in its multiple patterns. That is to undo our "reality" under the view of other configurations, other syntaxes (Barthes, 1970). This "Passage to India" can then open up broader perspectives : to consider City and its signification, City as a concept in the light of an "other" pattern.
Cette « excursion indienne » tente une géographie culturelle de la ville, en évitant les deux écueils du culturalisme et de l'ethnocentrisme européen. Comprendre le sens de la ville en Inde, c'est saisir la spatialité indienne en constante construction et dans sesmultiples déclinaisons. C'est « défaire notre « réel » sous l'effet d'autres découpages, d'autres syntaxes » (Barthes, 1970). Le « voyage » en Inde ouvre alors des perspectives constructives plus larges : penser la ville et son sens, la ville comme concept à travers un « autre » modèle.
