NIASA-CEPT Workshop on ANCIENT VALUES AND INDIGENOUS REALITY AS A BASIS FOR LEARNING ARCHITECTURE

Faculty: Shri Ashish Ganju and Shri Narendra Dengle

The three day workshop will be conducted by MN Ashish Ganju and Narendra Dengle, who have jointly written an essay entitled, "the Discovery of Architecture - a contemporary treatise on ancient values and indigenous reality". The essay will form the reading material as preparation for the workshop, which will be moderated by Neelkanth Chhaya. The essay will be sent to each participant in advance.

The essay was written as an attempt to provide a matrix for theoretical ideas on architecture to emerge. For long the authors, who have been teaching architecture for several decades, have felt that our theoretical ideas are coming predominantly from the industrialised countries of the West, and we are unable to learn from our own context of time and place. In this way we are depriving our younger generations of the full range of creative possibilities.

The workshop will be an attempt to engage with other teachers of architecture to begin a process of enquiry leading towards the configuration of a new pedagogy with our own voice. This is likely to be an experimental venture, requiring creative responses from all the participants. The intent will be serious, even as we encourage expression which is spontaneous.

The format for the workshop would be structured around the above mentioned text. The text is organised with an introduction followed by four sections/chapters which outline an interdependent set of ideas. The authors will read out each section in each of the sessions of the workshop, which will be divided into 2 sessions each day, forming a total of 6 sessions over 3 days. Each reading will be followed by a discussion between the participants, moderated by Professor Chhaya. This will be the program for the first two days. The final day will be devoted to a general discussion about pedagogic and methodological possibilities emerging from the discussion of the previous sessions, and ending with a set of recommendations from the collective.
