AHMEDABAD: The city's Sanskar Kendra Museum, designed by the renowned French architect Le Corbusier in 1951, will soon become invisible to the casual observer passing by on the main road.

It is set to be completely eclipsed by a garish two-storey structure being built by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) right in front of it.

...

The new structure that is being built will become an office extension of departments in the AMC's central zone office at Danapith. The AMC authorities have already been informed about the strong resentment against the construction. Over the last three months, several petitions were sent to the AMC commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra by senior architects. However, the construction continues unabated.

Prof Neelkanth Chhaya, architect and former Cept University faculty, said at the petition-signing event that the whole of the US had just one Le Corbusier building. "We in Ahmedabad have four, this being one of them. In fact, the Sankar Kendra was also commissioned by the AMC itself. Ahmedabad is a privileged city when it comes to having a building made by a modern master. Hence, it is important that we save its heritage value," Chhaya said. The petition was signed by 60-odd people.
