SITE SPECIFIC CREATIVE WORKS & ACADEMIC PAPERS

PART 1: This is an open call for spatial art practitioners to propose temporal installations, performance or sound art projects to be situated in one of three Harry Seidler CBD foyer spaces, including Australia Square, Grosvenor Place, and 9 Castlereagh St, Sydney. This is for a one night only exhibition on November 7th 2014, held during the Sydney Architecture Festival and the Intercontinental Touring Harry Seidler exhibition HARRY SEIDLER: PAINTING TOWARD ARCHITECTURE at the Museum of Sydney.

Harry Seidler, student of Walter Gropius at Harvard University USA in 1945/46, immigrated to Australia in 1948. In his architectural career he collaborated with artists such as Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Lin Utzon, Charles Perry, Sol LeWitt and Norman Carlberg on art works for his buildings, also looking toward the geometries and patterns used by these artists for appropriation in his architectural language (for more information on Seidler’s art collaborations see: Vladimir Belogolovsky, Harry Seidler LifeWork, 2014). Expanded Architecture invites artists and architects to propose temporal and transient contemporary art projects that examine various art/architecture intersections from the Bauhaus era, or inspirations from formalist, modular art from the 1960s. Proposals can be either suited to a portion of a foyer space or larger works which occupy a whole foyer. Depending on the size and scale of projects proposed, between 1-4 projects will be accepted per foyer space.

The proposals and images that are accepted will be published on the Expanded Architecture website and used in marketing material. Final works will be published in the book Expanded Architecture : Temporal Formal. The works will be selected in consultation with an advisory board, including Penelope Seidler, Vladimir Belogolovsky, Dr Caroline Butler-Bowdon and Dr Lian Loke.

PART 2: This is an open call for theoretical and historical papers from academics, as well as practice-oriented contributions from architects, artists and curators for presentation at the Symposium on 8 th November and inclusion as a chapter in an edited book and/or special issue of a journal.Expanded Architecture is looking for papers that reflect upon contemporary transient or temporal interpretations of modernist, modular and formalist art/architecture from the Bauhaus to today. Papers may be based upon proposals for site-specific works or stand-alone papers for the symposium. Abstracts will be double-blind peer reviewed prior to the symposium, and select papers will be invited to submit a full 2500 word paper for double-blind peer review prior to the publication of the book: Expanded Architecture: Temporal Formal.

Expanded Architecture : Temporal Formal at Seidler City is partnered with: The Seidler Architectural Foundation, Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, The University of Sydney, Sydney Architecture Festival, Australia Square, Grosvenor Place, Charter Hall, Museum of Sydney and Sydney Living Museums.

Expanded Architecture is curated by Sarah Breen Lovett and Dr Claudia Perren.
