Al Jazeera’s forthcoming series ‘Rebel Architecture’ has been invited to preview two films tomorrow at the World Urban Forum in Medellin, Colombia.
‘Rebel Architecture’ follows architects who have chosen to shun a ‘star-chitecture’ career, and are using their skills to design for the majority and as a form of activism and resistance.
Producer/Director Ana Naomi De Sousa will be showcasing the films and discussing the genesis of the series, including how the six featured architects where chosen. Series Creator and Producer Daniel Davies said, “It is a huge honour to be been invited to show Rebel Architecture at the World Urban Forum. It is the perfect venue to showcase a series exploring innovative ways of doing architecture.”
The two films to be screened at The World Urban Forum focus on Spanish architect Santi Cirugeda and Israeli Eyal Weizman.
‘Santi Cirugeda: Guerilla Architect’ looks at Cirugeda’s work on the edge of Spanish law, where he oversees projects on occupied land that often built with the labour of the client. “Contemporary architecture is all about ‘what a beautiful building, what a pretty project’”, says Cirugeda. “Architecture is more than that; it should be functional, cheap and a reason to come together.”
“Eyal Weizman: The Architecture of Violence” follows the dissenting Israeli architect across the West Bank as he analyses architecture’s central role in the Israeli occupation and the development of urban warfare. “Architecture is the materialisation of politics,” says Weizman. “By looking at the interaction between the natural and built environment we can see the political forces at play.” For Weizman, when you look at the built environment and landscape of Israel/Palestine you are “looking at a battle field and the weapons and ammunition are very simple elements; they are trees, they are terraces, they are houses and cladding, they are barriers.”
The full Rebel Architecture series will launch on Al Jazeera English on 18 August 2014. Stay in touch with the series and follow #rebelarchitecture.
