Alvar Aalto’s Villa Mairea (Noormarkku, Finland, 1938–39) is a celebrated work of modern architecture. This film is one in a series of five by Finnish filmmaker Rax Rinnekangas, titled Five Master Houses of the World, which documents private homes designed by leading architects of the twentieth century.

The film provides insight into the influences, designs, details and forms of Villa Mairea, shedding light on Aalto’s concept for the project and his particular architectural approaches. This iconic project holds particular relevance for the work of Italian architect Umberto Riva and Indian architect Bijoy Jain, currently on view in the CCA main galleries. A free screening shown in conjunction with the exhibition Rooms You May Have Missed: Bijoy Jain, Umberto Riva.1
