Images of the City: The Architectural Medal as Visual Medium
As small, portable bearers of images with vast dissemination and a pictorial tradition essentially reaching back to antiquity, medals may be considered one of the central media of articulating, propagating, and legitimizing urban images in early modern Europe. From the outset, Rome was the city most closely tied with the visual medium of the medal, and its urban image was more widely disseminated on coins and medals than that of any other city.
The significance of the early modern medal as a visual medium for architecture and urbanism forms the core of the workshop. The pictorial language of medals and their relationship to architectural drawing, prints, building design, and antiquarian research as well as to cartography will be investigated.
The workshop consists of a half-day session at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte and a second part at the Staatliche Münzsammlung, Munich, where short papers will be presented in front of the objects themselves. The event will serve as preparation for an exhibition on Roman architectural medals.
