NEW DELHI: At least 35 lakh households in urban areas have no source of income while 90 lakh households are headed by female family members, according to raw data available from the first ever socio-economic and caste census (SECC) in urban areas.

The data, which is yet to be finalized, has not yet been released, but TOI managed to access some of the key findings. The government on Friday released the data for rural areas, while the findings relating to urban areas would be released soon.

Official sources said that such households were identified during the survey covering about 6.51 crore units, which went on for 2-3 years. The criteria that were adopted include the type of shelters they live in, whether they have electricity and water connections, toilet facilities within premises and households headed by both literate and illiterate female members.

TOI has learnt that the data has not been finalized since the criteria for `deprivation' in urban areas are yet to be fixed and hence there is no clear data on what percentage of household are deprived.Sources said that the criteria for categorizing people under categories like houseless and poor will soon be placed before the government for its approval. Though a panel headed by former Planning Commission member S R Hashim had recommended the criteria for identifying the urban poor, the government is yet to take a final view.

"Some of the data is yet to come from Delhi and Mumbai, the two major urban centres," added an official.
