Panel Abstract: What does it mean to interpret metropolitan models in a colonial context? How are accepted artistic conventions and techniques reworked in far away places or in the same location, but separated by time? Over and above the question if “copies” are second-rate iterations, this panel explores how and why things colonial interpret models to express, fulfill, and perform concerns of artistic expression or social function. The panel organizer welcomes submissions that examine metropolitan models, either European or pre-Hispanic, against their colonial interpretations. Paper topics are open to any medium (painting, cartography, architecture, and urbanism, among others). Studies can include but are not limited to questions of aesthetic value, originals and copies, materiality and (re)production, and reception.
