Exhibition by Sudarshan Shetty

pieces earth left behind is a work that relies on a simple gesture of replication. The original objects have been collected over the years from the flea market in Mumbai and from other sources of domestic discards. The replicas in wood are painstakingly carved in teak wood that would have belonged to various dismantled structures in and around Mumbai. These objects, as they belong to an erstwhile life, now stand as silent symbols of a romantic past — a past, that we perhaps carry within each of us.

The artist plays on the assumed value of recalling history through a contemporary gesture of representation. The theatricality of representation and the subsequent effect are brought into focus. The objects have been removed from their functional context. Have been emptied, or not at all, of their symbolic meaning and are now reused simply as props for a performance of our everyday lives.
