While the central government has ordered closure of the Government Printing Press in Sector 18, the Chandigarh administration has planned to convert the building into a museum of heritage furniture. 
The UT administration had stopped hiring workers for the Government Printing Press last year itself. 

The Punjab governorcum-UT administrator VP Singh Badnore, along with UT adviser Manoj Parida, with other senior officials of the UT administration visited the building in Sector 18, on Thursday. 

When contacted, UT Adviser Manoj Parida said they are planning to convert the building into museum for heritage furniture.1

The government press has 263 employees in different departments. Besides regular publication jobs for the Chandigarh administration, it also prints various public orders, notifications, and forms. It does binding work and publishes documents such as examination papers.

Notably, the entities including furniture, tapestry, drawings and other things, which were designed, made and used by city’s creator and French architect Le Corbusier, his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and others associated with the founding and planning of Chandigarh in the 1950s and 60s, comes under the category of heritage items. The UT administration had prepared inventory of as many as 12,793 heritage items belonging to Chandigarh.
