Urbane Ringbegrünung in Europa: Entstehung, Verbreitung, Differenzen, Nutzung

Esplanades, parks and cultural buildings replacing glacis, ditches and fortresses – the transformation of the fortified borders of a city into spacious greenways also changed the character of the European city sustainably. Proceeding from Paris in the 1660s, urban green belts gained acceptance in many cities across Europe as early as the second half of the 18th century. Making use of the concepts of garden art, systematic greening swept cities from Paris to Cracow and from Berlin to Lucca.

The conference analyzes the history, the development and the maintenance of green belts on the basis of prominent examples. Topics range from early esplanades via ring roads following the Viennese example to the park systems of the 20th century. It is our aim to review the variety and the current value of the historic inventory and thus add to the protection as well as the enhancement of urban green belts.
