Mar 25, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government plans to relaunch the Village Reawakening (Gam Udawa) Programme that was launched in 1980s to provide shelter to low income people.

Village Reawakening Programme was launched in 1980s with the principle that shelter is fundamental to people's physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. However, the program was stopped in mid 1990s.

Former president Late Ranasinghe Premadasa was the architect of the innovative development scheme and he launched the Gam Udawa scheme to uplift villages in all over the country.

Minister of Housing and Construction Sajith Premadasa has proposed relaunching of the program and holding the Village Reawakening Exhibition in line with the Programme in several electorates from this year.
