Chief executive Louise Herron said the Sydney Opera House was a step closer towards realising Joern Utzon's vision for his landmark building with the unveiling of the Utzon/Le Corbusier tapestry.

"His vision was to have the greatest artists of the day – Matisse, Picasso and Le Corbusier – provide works for the building as a source of inspiration," she said.

The tapestry, Les Des Sont Jetes (The Dice Are Cast), which was purchased at auction last year for $540,000 (including the buyer's premium), will hang in the Opera House's western foyers.

"What we are here today to do is to inject a truly unique piece of the Opera House's DNA back into the building as we embark on a decade of renewal," Herron said on Tuesday.

The tapestry spent several months with restorers in Chatswood before it was ready to hang in the Opera House.

Herron said parts of the tapestry had faded and were "quite dirty".

"It had actually hung behind their dining room table for 50 years so there was a bit of gravy on it, which was great to have removed," she said.

The tapestry originally was destined for the main box office foyer alongside Utzon's Homage to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach tapestry. The latter now hangs in the Utzon Room.

However, planned renovations led to the choice of the western foyers as "a holding place".
