JJ College of Architecture ‘unapproved’ by all-India body; council says it’s a regular list; institutes say they don’t need certification.

As per data provided by the [AICTE], 16 technical institutes and 40 architecture colleges in Maharashtra have been listed as “unapproved”. Of these, 14 technical institutes and 13 architecture colleges are in Mumbai. Among the technical institutes, most of the “unapproved” ones include catering and business management colleges.

Elphinstone College principal Dr Madhuri Kagalkar attributed the confusion to the now-suspended hotel and tourism management course which was run by the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University until 2013. “The course was discontinued by the University on May 18, 2013. Thereafter, we informed the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) but we think the AICTE did not remove our name from the latest list,” Kagalkar said, claiming the college itself doesn’t require the council’s approval for its courses.1

According to Rajiv Mishra, the principal of Sir JJ College of Architecture, even though it’s not mandatory for architecture colleges to seek the council’s approval, his college had obtained the AICTE nod. “All architecture colleges across the country require approval from the Council of Architecture,” Mishra told Mirror.
