Delhi-based designer Gunjan Gupta representing India at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2016. With the theme for this year being “time-space-existence”, the exhibition marks the first time that design has been included in an architecture biennale. Gunjan’s works will be showcased alongside renowned names in the design world including award-winning design icon Karim Rashid.

Gunjan Gupta’s design studio ‘Studio Wrap’ in Delhi - Her work borders between design and art with a unique philosophy that captures India's cultural narrative and paradoxes. At the Venice Design 2016, her collection titled ‘Sacred Geometry’ draws inspiration from Mughal Indian architecture. Her designs have made their way to prominent fairs across the globe such as Design Miami and Art Basel. Her creation will be showcased at the La Triennale di Milano where her unique Gada Throne chairs are a part of ‘Alamak!’, a group show by well-known Japanese curator Yoichi Nakamuta. Talking about her expectation and experience, Gunjan says, “It is an amazing opportunity. I am very much looking forward to it. With India having taken the Make in India initiative seriously, I think my work has just begun. The making of the pieces is a case in point for the cause of Make in India and resonates with the theme of the exhibition.” Gunjan is a Masters Graduate in Furniture Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London. Her efforts in repositioning the ‘Made in India’ brand internationally have won her global recognition that includes several Elle Decor International Design Awards and British Council’s YCE finalist role in 2007. She has curated the India design exhibition at the Experimenta Design Biennale, Lisbon in 2009. “My creative process is inspired by India, Indian stories and craft processes, be it the market craft, the high luxury craft or the 'jugaad' technique that India is very well-known for. I combine all of these into my creative process to create designs that relate to the Indian vocabulary. It's a very common vocabulary in the West. In India, people are not so familiar with it but we are talking about very large motive where every piece of furniture is not about comfort,” adds Gunjan. .... © Gunjan Gupta’s Studio Wrap
