The great transformation experienced by Spanish architecture during the reign of Emperor Charles V finds a brilliant and diverse expression in the activity of Diego de Riaño and Diego Siloé. Both masters, one working in the Sevillian metropolis and the other in the former Nazari capital, the last bastion of Islam on the Peninsula, defined two very different models of operation, both of which, in the first decades of the 16th century, produced some of the pioneering architecture in Spain with a fully Renaissance language. This congress proposes an approach to the figure of these two great architects in the context of the transition to the Renaissance in Spain. Their reference is also intended to serve as a pretext for tackling similar phenomena from a broader perspective, incorporating methodological and historiographic problems within a European framework.

The organisers invite national and international researchers to an event that builds a cooperative space for interdisciplinary dialogue, that offers an attractive and combining programme of keynotes and plenary sessions given by experts in the field, with the presentation of unpublished papers, previously selected by a scientific committee. The book chapters will be published gathering all contributions. Papers are subject to evaluation using a double-blind peer-reviewed system as a synonym of scientific quality.

For post-graduate students, the organization will issue a certificate for the recognition of the congress as an academic activity if necessary.

Development of Congress: The congress will be hosted in Seville and Granada. The organization will be responsible for transport between the two cities. The sessions will begin on the 11th May in the city of Sevilla, where the opening will take place. In addition to the sessions, you will be able to visit the cathedral of Seville with special attention to the main sacristy, as well as the city council, both works designed by Diego de Riaño. On the 13th the congress will be transferred to Granada, where the sessions will continue and the closing conference will take place. Another tour is planned to visit the cathedral of the Incarnation, designed by Diego Siloé, as well as Charles V's palace, designed by Pedro Machuca.

Organizing institutions: The initiative of this congress is fostered under the auspices of R&D Project HAR2016-76371-P: DIEGO DE RIAÑO, DIEGO SILOE AND THE TRANSITION FROM GOTHIC TO RENAISSANCE IN SPAIN. ARCHITECTURE AND CITY: TECHNOLOGY, LANGUAGE AND SPATIAL CONCEPTION, with funding from the Government of Spain and ascribed to the University Institute of Architecture and Construction Sciences (IUACC) of the University of Seville.

The meeting is also supported by the Thematic Network of Cooperative Research on Late Gothic Art, XV-XVI Centuries (Red Tardogotico), a permanent network of projects and research groups, in which the universities of Cantabria, Seville, Lisbon, Palermo and Zaragoza participate. 

The Organizing Committee is made up entirely of members from the universities of Seville and Granada.
