The two-member jury of noted architects roped into judge the designs for monument marking the Amaravati foundation stone laid by the Prime Minister on Saturday went through the designs presented by architecture students and architects from Andhra Pradesh.

In a bid to exhibit local talent in designing large scale projects, the Indian Institute of Architects, A.P. Chapter, announced a competition ‘Architect Expo-2016’ for architects and students pursuing architecture courses in the State.

Participants were asked to come up with designs to build a monument at the historic site in Uddandarayunipalem in Guntur district. According to IIA A.P. Chapter chairman G. Vivekananda Swamy, the competition received 20 entries, including 13 from architects and seven from students from School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada, Acharya Nagarjuna University and Andhra University.

To pick top designs noted urban design architect Ujan Ghosh and noted landscape architect Nina Chandavvarkar went through the 20 designs and conceived the result to be declared during the three day expo on July 15, 16 and 17 in city.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ujan Ghosh stressed the need for role of local architects when developing public spaces in the country. “Culture can be reflected in public places only and monuments can get recognition only if people are involved in it,” he said.

“In India we have very cities with riverfronts and one should celebrate them making activity happen there,” Ms. Nina said. About the designs presented, Ms. Nina said that all the designs were well thought-out and impressive but we should ensure monuments should sit properly with the rest of surroundings. “All the designs presented here are good ideas and can’t be built in reality as there are.”
