With barely two weeks to go before a team of the Unesco's think tank, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), visits Ahmedabad's Walled City to inspect whether Ahmedabad deserves the World Heritage City status, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has pressed the panic button. Today, the ASI will hold a meeting with the Waqf Board to work out a plan to remove temporary structures or encroachments around the many monuments in the city which are Islamic structures.

The ASI has over the past two years filed close to 100 FIRs against illegal constructions, including violations of the 100-meter construction restriction around protected monuments.

The FIRs have been filed against encroachers at the Shah Alam mosque, Delhi Gate, the tomb of Qutub Alam Vatva, Premabhai Gate, Sarangpur Gate, Achyut Bibi Mosque, Teen Darwaza and many other monuments. All of these sites have been mentioned in the Ahmedabad dossier presented to the Unesco.
