PANAJI: Reckoning that the 21st century is witnessing growing disparity between the rich and the poor, a panel of experts, present in the capital city for the second annual Z-Axis conference on architecture, urged young professionals and students to take malpractices head-on to serve the poor population as well.

"Currently, we all are working for just one per cent of the population that is rich. The disparity is growing ever more and we, as architects, should promote responsible practices which will benefit the remaining 99% of the population as well. We have to go beyond the agendas of designing beautiful structures to achieve that," Marina Tabassum from Bangladesh said.

The discussion, part of the ongoing, three-day conference, saw topics such as the importance of engaging different methodologies to anticipate and converge culture and religious context while designing buildings, being debated.

"We, as architects, have to devise a way to contextualize all the multiple historical and local cultural aspects while designing a structure," Abha Narain Lambah said.
