Setting a true example for other cities in the country to follow, Gujarat's slum rehabilitation policy provides in-situ rehabilitation for the poor slum dwellers living in slums situated on public land in the urban areas of the state. Under the Gujarat Slum Rehabilitation Policy-PPP-2013, Ahmadabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has fulfilled housing requirement of urban poor, including slum dwellers. Although it took a long time to change but now the dream of every slum dweller is turning into reality in the state.

State government provides houses of a minimum 25 sq m carpet area with basic civic amenities free of cost to the slum dwellers. For this purpose, they attract private investment by public-private partnership through e-tendering.

The beneficiaries (slum dwellers) get the ownership rights of the house after 15 years.  Mukesh Kumar, Municipal Commissioner, AMC explained that the slum dwellers are paid rentals during the construction of the pucca houses and subsequently they get all the basic amenities free of cost after the rehabilitation.

So far, AMC has built 2,544 flats and 83 shops for the dwellers of nine slum colonies of the city. The work has also begun in Ahmadabad's perhaps biggest slum pocket, situated in Vadaj area right next to the road connecting Gandhi Ashram to Vadaj circle. It has over 7,500 families residing in it.
