The government has selected Mumbai’s Victorian and Art Deco district around the Oval Maidan to be nominated as the World Heritage site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) for 2017-18. It is also said that the Paris’ World Heritage Centre will send a team for the inspection of the site in September-October 2017.

The UN Centre has written to the Government of India that the heritage dossier submitted for the Victorian and Art Deco Ensemble has passed the document check and will send a mission in September-October to look after the management framework. The team will probably meet the government officials from the State Urban Development department. The submitted dossier has been prepared by architect Abha Narain Lambah and seconded by several citizens’ associations at Churchgate, Nariman Point, Oval and Cooperage areas.

If the UNESCO approved the Oval Maidan precinct for the heritage tag then it will be the third world heritage site in Mumbai.
