The Gujral Foundation in association with Outset India is pleased to present multi-disciplinary artist Remen Chopra W. Van Der Vaart’s solo exhibition ‘Memory’s Cut:Its Deep Embrace’ at 24 Jor Bagh, New Delhi.1i
In this exhibition, the artist transforms 24 Jor Bagh into a series of personal spaces that encapsulate her memories of home. She uses varied media such as photography, drawing, sculpture, textiles and sound, to reflect upon personal and familial histories of migration. Her work is a unique assemblage of intimate moments, poetry and personal objects that were passed on from one generation to the other. Remen is inspired by architecture and constructs complex monochromatic, performance-based montages that are significantly drawn from the aesthetics of theatre. She meticulously layers photographs and drawings on translucent sheets of gateway or mulmul, that capture a fleeting moment in time. The figures are staged and sometimes in transition, evoking a sense of mystery as well as nostalgia.i
Remen’s work bridges the past, present and future, where time is seen as a continuous loop of events. The exhibition is a poignant chronicle of her life that intertwines personal archives, notions of home and memory.
Born in 1980 in New Delhi, Remen Chopra W. Van Der Vaart received her BFA and MFA in painting from the College of Art, New Delhi. She studied art history and Italian at the Universita’ per Stranieri, Siena and continued her visual art studies at the School of Visual Arts, New York. Her works have been exhibited at museums and institutions such as the Essl Museum, Vienna, Casa Masaccio, Italy, Westerhuis Amsterdam amongst others. In 2017, her sculptural installation titled ‘I see a mountain from my window’ was featured at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale curated by Sudarshan Shetty. The artist currently lives and works in Mumbai.
