MATERIA ARQUITECTURA is a semiannual publication about architecture, edited by the School of Architecture of Universidad San Sebastián since 2009. As a record, dissemination, and reference tool, the journal intends to widen the knowledge of the discipline from a critical perspective, aiming at the opening of new discourses of contemporary architecture.

MATERIA ARQUITECTURA is open to the whole academic and professional community, national and international. The journal has a special interest in publishing works on the theoretical research and practical production of current architecture in Latin America.

CALL FOR PAPERS MATERIA ARQUITECTURA N°16: THEORY

During the last decade, and always with a bit of uneasiness, some have wondered what has happened to theory. If there are no more treatises or manifestos, if there are no Rossis or Venturis, ¿what’s going on with it? In 2013, Anthony Vidler and Peter Eisenman edited Log 28: Stocktaking, paraphrasing Banham’s own 1960 Architectural Review one, which charted the advances of the digital over history. In 2015, the annual academic conference AHRA, held in Leeds, proposed to explore the role of theory while contesting its instrumentalisation in the post-digital era, with results as divergent and disperse as the very same concept of the ‘post-digital’.
This issue of the magazine poses the question in a slightly different way: MATERIA ARQUITECTURA N°16 asks ‘where is theory?’ This formulation suggests that theory does exist and that it even may be in good health. The answers we seek might explore the ‘spaces’ that house theory and the kind of exchanges that these encourage. It proposes that, where conversations are found (dialogues instead of monologues), a position has been taken and therefore arguments have been made and theory has been put to work. If found, we ask: what is it about? What are they? Where are they going? from circumstantial breakthroughs to enduring developments. This question is critical in two levels: first, because it might help tracing an image of the state of theory now (and therefore what, who and in what context) and, secondly, because it suggests the far more crucial question of where is theory in relation to the building – if before, during or after. For, as we now, the stuff of architecture are indeed words and buildings.
