A lecture by Peter Scriver

The talk explores a broad history of mobility in the Indian Ocean World in the 19th and 20th centuries and its role in diffusing and developing wider networks of cultural, economic, and labour flows (manual and professional) that have been building the urban fabric and infrastructure of otherwise unrelated cities, as seen through the culture of "Indian" cameleers (among other trades) in the colonial settlement history of Australia.

Peter Scriver, International Visiting Chair SSAA, is a founding member of the Centre for Asian and Middle-Eastern Architecture (CAMEA) at the University of Adelaide, where he has taught Modern Architectural History, Theory and Design and directed postgraduate research since 1996. Scriver is a critical authority on the architectural history of modern India and has authored and co-authored several volumes on the subject including India: Modern Architectures in History (University of Chicago Press, 2015), Colonial Modernities: Building, Dwelling and Architecture in British India and Ceylon (Routledge, 2007), and After the Masters (Univ of Washington Press, 1990).
