Arts special issue, MDPI

Deadline: Jun 30, 2018

This newly-launched Arts special issue "The Machine as Art (in the 20th Century)" aims to provide a (re)thinking of the cultural relationship between man and machine through artistic expression. To this end, we welcome all contributions falling anywhere within the spectrum of the middle of the XXth century, in which the machine became a legitimate artistic medium and the arts transformed to no longer be a canonical form of cultural communication restricted to specific elites and conducted according to specified rules and procedures1

. A retrospective look at those who, half a century ago, included the machine in their creative activity seems now essential to writing the history of art; but more to the point, the present inquiry also represents a vital contribution to the question of a humanity seeking to navigate with assurance upon its ocean of technology.

This special issue of the MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute) journal Arts is under the guest editorship of Juliette Bessette (Paris-Sorbonne University).

Deadline for manuscript submissions: 30 June 2018.

Please refer to the Introductory Essay for an overview of potential topics, and please refer to the special issue home page for submission guidelines.
