An India Today TV investigation has exposed that many unscrupulous builders in the National Capital Region (NCR) are pushing illegally built, structurally weak apartments to unsuspecting buyers. And the bait is quite attractive - loan subsidies under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

The racket was found fraudulently offering interest subvention under the flagship scheme that aims at ensuring housing to all by 2022.

Bhupa Devi and Maya Devi of village Pandit Pur in Jhanjhari block told India Today how they failed to secure state assistance because they were not able to bribe officials.
A number of other villagers living in shacks had the same grievance to share. Gonda's chief development officer Ashok Kumar admitted that as many as 2,032 housing applicants under PMAY have been found bogus in the district in 2017-18.
"Of them, 1,432 have returned the government assistance," he told India Today. "Departmental inquiries against local officials and FIRs against wrongful beneficiaries have been initiated. 56 people are facing action."
When India Today reached out to some of the wrongful beneficiaries in Gonda, they explained how easy it was for them to secure assistance fraudulently. Mashook Ali confessed that he had a pucca house but hoodwinked the scheme meant for those living in dilapidated shacks.
"I returned the financial assistance out of fear. My old parents and I would not like to go to jail," he said.
