Panel at the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA) Conference Las Vegas: “City of God, City of Destruction”

Presiding Officers:

  • Megan Edwards (Independent Scholar)
  • Oksana Marafioti (University of Nevada - Las Vegas)

Las Vegas claims a global reputation as the city of sin, escape, and second chances. Her best-known persona is that of madam, a skilled and beguiling hostess who provides a daily tide of visitors with indulgences and a chance to disengage. Take a look behind the façade to discover the other roles Las Vegas plays, both to her residents and those who choose not to suspend disbelief. As the only major American metropolis founded in the 20th century, Las Vegas builds on her unabashed childhood with adolescent ebullience. She retains and polishes her skills as madam to the world, but is equally accomplished as mother and muse.

This panel discussion focuses on the Las Vegas known well to residents but often invisible to visitors. Panelists include writers, artists, and representatives of Las Vegas museums, businesses, and academic institutions. The conversation will pierce the veneer Las Vegas presents to the world to shine a light on Las Vegas literature, history, culture, diversity, architecture, and plans for the future. Discover the multifaceted city that has grown from its infancy as a railroad siding into the unique and vibrant metropolis that more than two million people call home.
