Cumulus Conference, Rovaniemi 2019

Arctic environment celebrates resilience through design practice and research. The discussion is complimented by intelligence that is visible through design applications that embrace smart, green and social innovation.

Cumulus welcomes proposals for academic and professional papers for the Cumulus 2019 conference ‘Around the Campfire: Resilience and Intelligence’. The goal of the conference is to bring together academics and practitioners from various fields of art and design to facilitate inspiring and progressive discussion by sharing knowledge of past, existing, and future activities from around the globe. We welcome individuals from academia and industry with different approaches, including, but not limited to, hands-on design and art practices, theory, design thinking and industrial practise.

Themes

We invite professionals, researchers and artists to submit proposals (details below) that discuss and explore exemplary and imaginative collaborations in relation to the theme of the conference, ‘Around the Campfire: Resilience and Intelligence’. We welcome contributions from academia and practitioners to join the conversation – around the campfire in Rovaniemi! We are particularly interested in proposals that develop, explore, investigate, and generate new knowledge in design, art or media, with the following themes in mind:

Resilience and Intelligence in Design, Art and Media
Arctic and Sustainable Art and Design
Cross-disciplinary Paths for Art, Design and Media
The Future of Design Teaching
Creative Industries and Entrepreneurship
Cultural and Participatory Perspectives
Innovative Techniques, Methods and Theory

Types of Contributions

  • Academic papers, with a focus on research: theory, methodology and findings, describing contributions to new knowledge.
  • Professional papers, including industrial and educational, with a focus on practical application.
  • Posters, with a focus on the conference’s main theme and its visual communication from either an academic or a professional perspective.
  • Work of art, with a focus on the conference’s main theme. All works of art, interpretations and reflections related to the theme are welcome from artists and designers within the Cumulus network. Participation can be individual or collective.

Submission of all abstracts and digital images of works of art: 11.12.2018
Notifications of accepted abstracts: 15.01.2019
Submissions all full papers: 15.02.2019
Final notification of full papers: 15.03.2019
Camera-ready papers due: 30.03.2019
Works of art due (arrival by post): 30.04.2019
