The inclusion of 'Educational' category for occupancy during building plan approval, according to EVDM officials, would make it mandatory for school managements to apply and obtain approval.

Hyderabad: With a view to making school managements ensure fire safety measures on their premises, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s Enforcement Vigilance and Disaster Management (EVDM) has recommended inclusion of the ‘Educational’ category of occupancy for building plan approvals. At present, the GHMC issues building plan approvals for domestic and commercial type structures.

The inclusion of ‘Educational’ category for occupancy during building plan approval, according to EVDM officials, would make it mandatory for school managements to apply and obtain approval. This apart, such structures would have to comply with the National Building Code of India and the Supreme Court guidelines.

There are over 5,800 schools in the GHMC limits, with most of them lacking fire safety measures or firefighting systems. To ensure safety of children and to avoid any untoward incidents, all the schools proposed to be set up should be housed in ‘Educational’ category buildings and should not be permitted in any domestic or commercial structures, says GHMC EVDM Director Viswajit Kampati.
