With the Puducherry government notifying the norms for conservation of heritage buildings in the Union Territory, the process has started for preparing an exhaustive dossier for Puducherry to be listed under the Unesco World Heritage Cities.

The Old Town of Ahmedabad is the only city in India to be approved by Unesco as a World Heritage City.

According to a top government official, a team from the Department of Town and Country Planning and Local Administration Department visited Ahmedabad recently to understand the process for applying for a World Heritage City tag.

Ahmedabad was declared India’s first World Heritage City on July 7, 2017.

“The official team from Puducherry studied the city’s model, including the special purpose vehicle Ahmedabad World Heritage Management Trust, aimed at conservation of heritage buildings, incentives for conservation of buildings, penal mechanism, timeline of the proposal and its implementation.”
