Macau (MNA) – The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) has underlined that a jury who awarded the contract to design of the new Macau Central Library to the company of local architect Carlos Marreiros accepted his response to accusations of plagiarism in the design.

MAA Marreiros Architectural Atelier Ltd won a bid to re-design the new Macau Central Library at a tender valued at MOP18.68 million (US$2.3 million), but with online surfacing that the design of the new Macau Central Library had plagiarised a building in Spain designed by Le Corbusier.

Last week Marreiros held a press conference in which he denied any plagiarism and defended the design crafted by his company, with a written explanation sent to IC on the issue.

‘The jury considers that contemporary architecture is deeply influenced by the works of the great architectural masters of the early twentieth century such as Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, whose language often becomes a model for architects of later generations. Both the Auditorio de León and the project of the New Central Library of Macau are inspired by the shading style of the façades of various works by Le Corbusier,’ the IC stated.
