NEW DELHI: It has been more than a month since Delhi’s longest pedestrian structure was thrown open, and yet people haven’t really warmed to the ITO skywalk. 

Connecting the Pragati Maidan metro station to Sikandra Road, Mathura Road, Tilak Marg and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, the Rs 54.84 crore structure was constructed for pedestrian safety. But few people, far less than the estimated average of 30,000 people, are using the skywalk regularly. 

School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) had planned to conduct a study on pedestrian traffic to understand the users’ perspective; but, the idea had to be shelved due to the very low number of users. 

Professor Sewa Ram from SPA told TOI, “We will revisit it later at an appropriate time.” 

Some pedestrians TOI found crossing the ITO intersection dangerously said they preferred jaywalking instead of using the skywalk as it saves time. Aditya, a college student, said the skywalk is rather long and twisted. “When time is a constraint, I prefer the road,” he said. 

Some other pedestrians also complained that the skywalk doesn’t go as far as they would have liked it to.
