The aim of this discussion is to outline the parameters that shape architectural practice today. With particular interest and focus on issues of scale, speed and the operational requirements, we ask, what is the relationship between the creative and business side of the practice? What is the relationship between the scale of practice and the nature of project? Is the large firm the only relevant mode of practice in the present architectural scenario? What are its methodologies? What are its potentials and limits? How do large firms connect and relate to the needs of the built environment? And finally what does this mean for the present and future of the profession?

C. DEVELOPING FUTURES? (6:30- 8:30 pm):

This session aims to discuss the idea of development, its future trajectories in shaping our cities and environment and how this impacts the profession of architecture both in terms of how ‘projects’ are defined and how it will require the architect to ‘perform’ – in new ways perhaps? In short, this session will ask what the world expects from architects?

This conversation is aimed to understand the perception that young architects have of the profession and its future, the potentials they see and the manner in which they plan to shape their work and practice.

E. EDUCATION FOR AN INTER-DISCIPLINARY FUTURE?

With the emphasis of architectural education shifting to a broader ‘interdisciplinary’ mode, we discuss the relevance of this approach. The need for a broader knowledge base versus an inevitable loss of disciplinary focus. What is a relevant approach to architectural education in the present context of the profession?

There are many forms of writing that have gradually become more important in the context of Indian Architecture. The book, the paper, the magazine and the newspaper all disseminate ideas of the profession. We discuss the importance and relationship of writing for the profession.

This discussion is aimed at the question, ‘why many architects choose to practice outside the boundaries of conventional practice?’ What motivates them, what they hope to achieve and the nature of
the practice that is a result of this. What is the professional importance of doing things that one doesn’t ‘have to’.

Discussing the potential and future of corporate patronage, how this should and can be channelled and conceptualised for the profession

I . QUIET FLOWS: (6:30-8:30 pm):
A conversation with architects Leo Periera and Kiran Pandya.
Moderator: Snehal Nagarsheth

A conversation with the two re-known architects whose practices have spanned a period of four decades and more, producing seminal works of architecture. Their involvement at the School of Architecture, CEPT University, Ahmedabad has shaped a generation of architecture students in the most profound manner. After many years they speak in public about their experiences and work.

This session ends where it all started with Rohan putting the contributors to the exhibition on the block, this time looking back at the year that the exhibition travelled and opened in cities across India. Most importantly it will discuss the relevance of such efforts and their potentials.
