Four years after the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), just 20 per cent houses have been completed under the scheme against the sanctioned number of houses, while another 52 per cent are grounded for construction. Out of ₹1-lakh crore Central assistance sanctioned for the scheme, the government has released just ₹34,000 crore.

In line with the government’s vision of “Housing for All” by 2022, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is implementing PMAY-U since June 2015 for providing assistance to States/Union Territories (UTs) in addressing the housing requirement of the people belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Lower Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG) categories in urban areas.

When it comes to completion of construction, Gujarat tops the chart among bigger States. Gujarat has completed construction of 43 per cent sanctioned houses followed by Rajasthan (31 per cent) and West Bengal (29 per cent). No bigger State has achieved 50 per cent target.
