We invite you to imagine A HOUSE FOR MERCE CUNNIGHAM, since this year it is his centennial.
Beautiful the relationship between architecture and dance, although not too many “practices” think about it… Steven Holl is an exception, and maybe very few others.
This only “criminal in the family” as Merce called himself in an interview (being the only artist in a family of lawyers – his father and his brothers were lawyers) did continue to work until the day he died, at 90, ten years ago. He worked with that tenacity that he expressed in this way: "choreography is like knitting – I don’t stop."
This is what any artist who deserves the name does. He / she keeps “knitting”…We ask you to explore CHANCE ARCHITECTURE, on this occasion, since Merce Cunnigham did the same, in dance… while his equally great “partner,” John Cage did the same in music.
We feel CHANCE has great potential in architecture… at a time when we program and plan everything, how very refreshing “chance” could be…
So let’s explore the architectonic equivalent of Cunningham’s choreography, as much as possible. Let’s study his work, his personality, his ideas, and let’s try to pay homage to him by imaging A HOUSE FOR MERCE CUNNINGHAM.
To let chance enter architecture means to work in an "unusual" way, although someone like Peter Eisenman did say that "luck" is always part of the work... but maybe "chance" is more than just "luck"...
All in all, a CHANCE ARCHITECTURE could be very exciting, especially at a time when we seem obsessed by controlling everything.
Let's give up on control... Design, dear architect, in the absence of control. Don't control anything! Don't "search" for anything... If Picasso said that he didn't search, he found, then maybe we could also try to FIND A HOUSE FOR MERCE CUNNINGHAM.
