'Strand' at the Complexity and the City, London

Numerous Latin American cities remain dominated by the architectural heritage of the Spanish conquistadores. Similarly, the marks of the British Empire can be found around the globe in cities such as New Delhi or Lahore. The influence of the Soviet Empire remains evident from Berlin to Budapest. Today, China is leaving its print across Africa with perhaps the construction of ”New Cairo” being the most conspicuous example.

The ‘Complexity and the City’ conference seeks to explore how the colonial experience has manifested itself in cities and across the world, and further explore the social and cultural imprint that underlies these physical manifestations of the past and present.

The conference is expressly into disciplinary and welcomes contributions from various fields: Cultural theory, history, urban planning, architecture, sociology and more.
