All PRINCIPALS/HODs OF SCHOOLS OF ARCHITECTURE

Dear Sir/Madam,

Please refer to the communication dated December 4, 2003 received from the Council of Architecture intimating the Schools of Architecture that Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Council of Architecture and AICTE with regard to furthering the cause of architectural education in India has since stands terminated and henceforth Council of Architecture shall discharge its obligations with regard to various provisions of Architects Act 1972 including architectural education and inspections etc. on its own. Simultaneously, some of the schools of architecture have received communication from AICTE intimating them that inspections of schools of architecture for granting extension of approval for the academic session 2003-2004 shall be conducted by AICTE.

You are aware that Architectural Education and Practice both are comprehensively dealt with by the Architect Act, 1972 which prescribes the standards of education which can lead to a recognized/qualification necessary for registration with the Council of Architecture for practicing the profession of architecture and also to seek employment in India. The Architects Act being a special law in this subject matter ensures proper growth and development of architecture profession by way of achieving excellence in education as prescribed from time to time by the Council of Architecture to meet the needs of profession and education.

Council of Architecture’s role and responsibilities have been clearly dealt with in the judgement dated 21-07-2003 of Hon’ble Madras High Courts and some of us are unable to understand the possible role of AICTE in the subject matter other than coordination of technical education system.

The present move of AICTE may have far reaching implications on architectural education and the practice of profession if architecture is also seen as merely one of the technical education like engineering and technology.

To deliberate upon the circumstances arisen and to chalk out a course of action in order to maintain dignity of noble profession of architecture, we invite you to participate in a discussion of all the Principals/HODs of Schools of Architecture, jointly hosted by AP Chapter of IIA and the CSI on 27th December at 11-0 a.m. at Hyderabad coinciding with NASA Convention being held at the same place.

President and Vice-President of Council of Architecture have consented to participate in this discussion.

Your presence is very vital and please make it convenient to attend this discussion.
